Details

Obtain a translation of your foreign driver’s license.
JAF can issue it for you.

The following are the procedures for people living in Tokyo.
1:Eye examination, etc.
2:Submit required documents
3:Simple traffic rule confirmation test
4:Make reservation for driving skills test (test date is a later date)

Required documents, etc
★Valid driver’s license issued by authority such as a foreign country
★Translation of foreign driver’s license obtained in STAGE 1
★Japanese driver’s license (if available)
★Residence card (juminhyo) showing permanent domicile
★Passport
★Photograph (height 3 cm × width 2.4 cm)
★Glasses
★Fee \4,250 (in the case of standard size car)
※In some cases, other documents will be required, so be sure to first inquire with the testing center, and then go to apply.

《 Actual cases where converting a foreign driver’s license was not possible 》 Case1:The foreign driver’s license was expired.
Case2:Applicant had not lived in the country for a total of 3 months or more after obtaining the license.
Case3:Spelling on documents such as driver's license and passport did not match (misspelling).
Case4:Date driver’s license first obtained was not written on driver’s license. In this case, substantiating documentation (driver’s record, etc.) by issuing authority in local country is required.

The following countries are exempted from the traffic rule confirmation test and driving skills test.
Australia, Austria, State of Maryland / Washington(U.S.A.), Belgium, Britain, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Kingdom of Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan.

Prepare for your exam.
Use image training to frequently imagine the key points for passing the test.

Drive on the test course in a examination car provided by the center.
An exam administrator rides with you in the passenger seat and scores your driving.
Actual driving time is about 15 minutes.
When you pass the exam, your driver’s license will be issued on the same day.
If you fail the exam, make a reservation for next one at a later date and take it again.
